What are the codecs for HTML5 video?

MP4 or H.264

This is the codec supported by Apple and Microsoft. It is a licensed codec that provides good quality video and small file sizes. There are a lot of programs available for both Mac and Windows that will encode in H.264 video.

Where the problem comes in is that this codec is not free. MPEG LA, the owner of the H.264 codec, has said they wouldn’t charge royalties for internet video that is free to end users in perpetuity. But what does that mean? They may charge browser makers and video editing software makers to put the codec into their products, or they could take it right to the video creators (although this is unlikely). Ultimately, if the MPEG group starts charging anyone for the license of this software, we will be paying for it at some point through increases to the price of software we purchase or the loss of support in browsers and other devices.

ogg/Theora

Ogg/Theora is a free open standard for video encoding. It generates high quality videos with comparatively larger file sizes. Plus it is a lot harder to find tools to convert to ogg/Theora. And in some cases they only convert the video, and not the video and audio.

Ogg/Theora is free software, so many people are comfortable using it because they are not concerned that they will be charged a license fee some day in the future. As such, we can expect that the cost of this codec will remain free.

WebM

WebM uses the VP8 codec that is owned by Google. It has high video quality, but it can take a lot longer to encode a video in WebM than in H.264. While Google claims that WebM has the highest video quality of all the web codecs, most independent sources find that either H.264 is slightly better or there is very little difference between the two. The problem is that it can be very difficult to encode, especially compared to the many free and commercial tools available to encode H.264.

The WebM codec is free and open source, so it should remain free to use. However, the underlying codec is owned by Google. And their position on open source could change in the future. Ultimately, most people are assuming it won’t, and so this codec will remain free.

The new iPad 2 has been finally unveiled. Although some users complained that it was underwhelming since there was no great changes and it still didn’t add SD or USB slot, you can’t deny that iPad 2 feature an all -new design along with new features.

At the heart of the iPad 2 is a 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 processor, which should provide a boost over the 1GHz single-core Apple A4 in the first iPad. Apple says the A5 is two times faster than the previous processor, while graphics performance is nine times faster.

“The graphics on this thing are wonderful,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who made a surprise appearance at the Wednesday event despite being on medical leave.

The iPad 2 features two built-in cameras, for use with FaceTime video chat and other apps. Overall, the iPad 2 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, weighing 1.3 pounds and measuring 0.35 inches thick. The original iPad was 1.5 pounds (1.6 pounds for the 3G iPad) and 0.5 inches thick. The iPad 2 is actually thinner than the iPhone 4, which is 0.37 inches thick.

Other new features include a gyroscope, 10 hours of battery life, and a choice between a black or white iPad.

There are six models of the iPad 2.

There are three Wi-Fi only models: a $499 version with 16GB of flash storage; a $599 model with 32GB of flash storage; and a $699 model with 64GB of flash storage.

Apple will offer three 3G-equipped models: a $629 version with 16GB of flash storage; a $729 model with 32GB of flash storage; and a $829 model with 64GB of flash storage. Apple said that the 3G iPad will work with AT&T or Verizon.

SourceTec software started soon after the Internet became popular in 1997. Located in the capital of Hubei province, Wuhan, China’s third ranked science and technology city, SourceTec specializes in flash video and DVD authoring tools for web developers. Marketed under the brand Sothink, the free video converter also has a paid Pro Version available. We will get into the differences later, but because of a support mixup (see the conclusions section), we ended up reviewing the Free version.

It has many unique features, one of which will save time or web developers who have to make a snapshot of the video so they can include that in the startup. It will convert videos to image series which shaves a little time from development, and adds flexibility to the product.

It handles all the following formats: AVI, WMV, ASF, MKV, H.264, RM, RMVB, MOV, QT, MP4, DV, 3GP, 3GP2, 3G2, 3GPP, MPG, MPE, MPEG, DAT, VOB, ASX, TS, MTS, FLV, RA, APE, WMA, MP3, M4A, AAC, AA3, OGG, FLAC, WAV, etc. So you can use it as your AVI converter, MKV converter, 3GP converter, MP3 converter, and so on.

The Sothink averaged about two minutes of conversion time for every five minutes of video (640×480) and it didn’t seem to matter what the format was. When converting for the smartphone sizes, the time was significantly decreased.
