Q1: What are the differences between the trial version and the registered version?
The trial version can be used without charge for a period of 30 days. However the created movies will be watermarked. The registered version has no time limitation and makes no watermark on the created movies. Q2: Which encoder is better, DivX, XviD, Ms MPEG-4 V1, V2, or V3?
We recommend you to choose XviD. Please check the definition given by doom9.com:
"XviD is a word play, read it the reverse way and you might find a familiar term. XviD is an open source MPEG-4 codec which depending on whom you're asking yields even better quality than the best DivX codec."
So XviD is based on DivX, but not like DivX, it is free of charge. (The early version of DivX is also free, but the performance can not be as good as the latest XviD which is always free.)
The conversion speed of Ms MPEG-4 V1/V2/V3 is slightly slower than XviD. And the picture quality of the converted movies is slightly lower too. Click here for more information about XviD.
Q3: Can this software keep the subtitles with movie?
Yes, Sothink DVD Ripper version 1.2 does support selecting and adding movie subtitles.
Q4: How can I speed up the conversion?
There are several ways to speed up the conversion:
- Choose XviD as the Video Encoder;
- Select a lower bit rate (click the "Encoder Settings" button);
- Set lower Dimension, such like "320x240", "160x120";
- Define smaller Frame Rate.
Though no matter what the settings are, converting a DVD to AVI movies is always time-consuming, Sothink DVD Ripper can do it faster than most other software when the settings are the same.
Q5: If I want to watch the converted movies on my mobile, then what are the best settings for the conversion?
You can just select "Symbian S60 platform" or "Video for Pocket PC" from the pre-defined profiles, if the system and platform are right for your mobile. If not, you'd better check what settings the player on your mobile supports, and then customize the settings one by one. Please note two settings: "Dimension" and "Frame Rate". The Dimension setting should be suitable for your mobile screen. And the Frame Rate would better be a number around 8 to 15; otherwise the created movie will pause all the while when played on a mobile device.
Q6: Except the main movie, there are more than one extra movies in a DVD, then how can I choose the useful ones to convert?
The program shows the duration of each movie. If an extra movie last for several minutes, then it could be a useful material, like a funny scene cut from the movie, or a short interview with the movie cast and crew; or it could be just an commercial ad. If a movie last only for a few seconds, then it could be the clip used by the DVD menu, which isn't useful to most users and might be unnecessary to convert.
Q7: What is CSS? How can I remove it?
Content Scrambling System (CSS) is created by the Hollywood Studios to prevent DVD movies from being pirated. The CSS encrypts the data on a DVD and requires a special key to decrypt it. Therefore before you convert a DVD you have to rip the protection from it first.
Sothink DVD Ripper does not integrate any decryption function inside. But it is not hard to find a good decrypting application such as DVD43 on Internet using a search engine (like Google). They are developed and distributed by independent third parties; none of which is affiliated with SourceTec Software.
