Why should you embed subtitles into video?
Not like PC, iPod does not support you to install a subtitle filter to display external subtitle files for video. So if you want to watch a subtitled iPod movie, you will need an iPod Converter which can convert video WITH subtitles, and embed the subtitles into video stream. The subtitle filter you need for conversion
1. Install VSFilter (also known as DirectVobSub)
VSFilter (DirectVobSub) is a DirectShow subtitle filter which can render different formats of external subtitle files (such as ".srt", ".sub") onto video during video playback and conversion. Download it here and install.
2. Save subtitle file to...
You MUST Name subtitle file using the relating video file's name. For example, if your video is "spiderman.avi", then just name its subtitle file as "spiderman.srt".
You can simply save subtitle file in the same folder with the relating video. This is the simplest way, and is the default setting in VSFilter.
If you want to save subtitles in other folder, open VSFilter, tab to "Paths" and add the folder.
As long as the subtitle file is in the right folder and correctly named, VSFilter can be launched automatically and immediately when you start converting video for iPod with Sothink iPod Video Converter (or whenever you play the video), and you will find its icon 
shown in "Notification area" of Windows Taskbar.
Now, simply start converting!

Make sure that the video file and its subtitle file use the same file name, and are in the right folder. Launch Sothink iPod Video Converter and click "Add" to load the video file.
You can customize the audio and video setting for conversion. Or just simply select one pre-defined profiles to set teh conversion. Click "Next", and conversion will begin. Check if the icon shows up during conversion on Taskbar, otherwise, maybe you haven't installed VSFilter correctly, or wrong path for subtitle, and the subtitle can be successfully embedded.
After it's done...
During the conversion, check the option "Load the created files to iPod", so that the program will automatically upload the created video to iPod for you. But you may like to check the created video before uploading.
Please use QuickTime Player to play the created video after the conversion is finished. You will find the subtitles are successfully embedded.
